This radar pulls raw data from the NEXRAD network operated by the National Weather Service and displays it as a color‑coded overlay on a street‑level map of San Antonio. Reflectivity values are shown in decibels of Z (dBZ). The velocity pane uses blues and reds to indicate motion toward and away from the radar site; streaks of color reveal the speed and direction of individual storm cells.
For practical interpretation, consider a red‑orange blob appearing over the far west side of Bexar County moving east at 20 km/h. If the blob maintains its shape and speed, residents near the Medina River can expect noticeable rain in 10‑15 minutes, while those farther east may see only scattered showers. Conversely, a stationary green patch over the downtown core often signals lingering mist that will dissipate without impacting travel plans.
To help users gauge timing, many radar displays include a loop of the last six frames. Watching the loop shows whether a cell is intensifying, weakening, or simply drifting, which is more informative than a single snapshot.
First, consult the accompanying watch or warning polygons. A red‑outlined area marked “Severe Thunderstorm Warning” means damaging winds or large hail are imminent; a polygon labeled “Tornado Warning” requires immediate shelter.
Second, if you are engaged in an outdoor activity—such as a picnic at Brackenridge Park, a bike ride along the Mission Reach, or a backyard barbecue—move to a sturdy structure or postpone the plan until the echo has passed. The radar’s velocity field can tell you whether the storm is likely to bypass your location or pass directly over it.
