The NHL has officially planted its flag in the Beehive State. The Utah hockey club new team steps onto the ice as the league’s newest franchise, relocating from Arizona and bringing top-tier professional hockey to a market eager for a winter sports spotlight.
The NHL’s arrival in Salt Lake City stems directly from the operational struggles of the Arizona Coyotes. When the Coyotes' arena situation became unsustainable, the league took unprecedented action to keep the franchise roster intact rather than folding the organization entirely. The Utah ownership group, led by Ryan and Ashley Smith of the Utah Jazz, aggressively pursued the opportunity, offering a stable NBA-adjacent infrastructure and an immediate home venue.
This isn’t an expansion team starting from scratch. The franchise inherited the existing Coyotes roster, meaning the club already possesses a functional core of young talent and veteran presence.
Because the roster is already built out, fans can expect competitive hockey right away rather than the growing pains typical of a brand-new expansion draft.
Initially, the team shares the Delta Center with the NBA’s Utah Jazz. This dual-use setup offers immediate viability and a buzzy, packed atmosphere for home games. However, hockey sightlines in a basketball-first arena often leave some lower-bowl seats with obstructed views of the boards. Long-term plans involve retrofitting the existing downtown arena or constructing a dedicated hockey facility to optimize the fan experience.
The move significantly reshapes the NHL map. Utah brings professional hockey into a rapidly growing Mountain West market, creating an instant regional rivalry with the Colorado Avalanche.
Not yet. The franchise is competing under the placeholder name "Utah Hockey Club" for its inaugural season. Management has committed to a methodical branding process, intended to involve local community input before rolling out a permanent name, logo, and color scheme down the line.
