That distance means the beam can overshoot low-lying rain near the coast or miss fast-moving storms skimming the skyline. Not all radar colors are created equal. A light blue patch might look harmless, but if it’s moving fast or growing darker at the edges, it could signal a sudden downpour. Another common trap is the “bright band” effect, where snow melting into rain near the freezing level creates a misleading ring of heavy precipitation on the map. This often fools viewers into thinking a storm is stronger than it is.
Pay attention to the storm’s shape too. A round, compact cell usually means a quick burst of rain, while a long, narrow line suggests a squall that could linger for hours. If you see a hook-shaped echo on the radar, that’s a classic sign of a rotating supercell—rare in DC but worth noting if you’re tracking severe weather. Ignoring these details is like reading a book by only looking at the cover.
Radar is excellent for tracking rain and snow, but it struggles with hail, wind gusts, or sudden temperature drops. For those risks, local weather services issue warnings based on ground observations and satellite data. If the last update was from five minutes ago, assume conditions could have changed. Pair radar checks with real-time apps like Storm Radar or the NWS mobile site for the freshest data.
